After completing his undergraduate career at Brown University in 1970, Mr. Whitman received his J.D. from Washington University School of Law in 1973. He concentrates in the area of insurance coverage, with particular emphasis on coverage afforded under automobile liability, general liability, life and health insurance, medical malpractice policies and self-insured plans. He has also represented healthcare entities in successfully securing reimbursement from insurers providing Directors and Officers insurance coverage and excess coverage as to professional malpractice claims.

Mr. Whitman serves as General Counsel to the Rhode Island Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association and the Medical Malpractice Joint Underwriting Association of Rhode Island. In addition, he advises a number of major health care institutions in Rhode Island as to their insurance programs, including Lifespan Risk Services, Inc. which manages the Lifespan Malpractice Plan providing self-insurance coverage for Lifespan Corporation, the largest healthcare institution in Southeastern New England. He has had extensive trial experience, in federal and state courts, and in hearings before the Insurance Commissioner of the State of Rhode Island. He is a member of the Rhode Island and American Bar Associations, the Defense Research Institute, and the Defense Counsel of Rhode Island. Mr. Whitman is AV peer review rated by Martindale-Hubbell*.
